 Back in the late 90s and early 2000s, the DC Elseworlds stories were one-shots and miniseries showing alternate universe takes on our favorite superheroes. And, no surprise, there were a hell of a lot of Batman installments.

 In 1989, Brian Augustyn and "Hellboy" creator Mike Mignola offered an "imaginary story" of Batman, set in a European Gotham City one hundred years in the past, pitting the caped crusader against Jack the Ripper. Titled "Gotham by Gaslight," the popular one-shot ushered in DC Comics' "Elseworlds" brand, a label designed to showcase the company's iconic heroes in tales set in alternate realities.

Today, Siliconera has a fascinating look at a videogame pitch inspired by "Gaslight" that, sadly, never made it into development.
