Has Everyone Forgot about the X-files!?!?!?

Fox's The X-Files: I Want to Believe bombed out of the gate, as the new movie only took in $4 million from 3,185 theatres its first day.
What happened???
A decade or more ago there were fans and conventions galore. Why didn't any of them go out to see the movie? The FOX network was saved because of the X-Files series, and it still runs in syndication all over North America. So why did it have such a poor opening???
Is it because of the incredibly poor ad campaign??? Come on!! I only saw one commercial for this movie before it opened...and I mean ONE TIME ONLY!!!! Was there an internet campaign??? If so I didn't see it!
I know there are still fans "out there."

The Dark Knight Soars!!!

Warner Bros. Pictures' The Dark Knight broke another record on Tuesday becoming the fastest ever to cross the $200 million mark in five days! The previous record of eight days was held by three films - Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, Spider-Man 2 and Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith.

Christopher Nolan's Batman Begins follow-up added $20.87 million on Tuesday to push its massive total to $203.8 million. That puts it at #84 already on the all-time domestic blockbuster list after just five days.

Right now, the only number we have for international markets is $41.3 million but that will start going up significantly as the movie is opening in many countries Thursday and Friday as well as into August.

So let's recap - widest release (4,366 theaters), biggest opening weekend ($158.4M), biggest July opener ($158.4M), biggest PG-13 rated opening ($158.4M), biggest single day ($67.2M), biggest opening day ($67.2M), biggest Friday ($67.2M), biggest Sunday ($43.6M) and fastest to $200M in five days ($203.8M).

Let's break some records!!!!!

Dark Knight Sets New Opening Day Record!
Source: Box Office Mojo July 19, 2008

Box Office Mojo is reporting that Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight has set a new opening day record with $66.4 million in a record 4,366 theaters (including 94 IMAX theaters) nationwide.

With brisk advance sales and early sell-outs reported all week from Fandango, it looks like the latest installment in Warner Bros' Batman franchise has delivered an opening day gross bigger than the previous five movies were able to make in their opening weekends alone. Even though Dark Knight opened with roughly $7 million more than Spider-Man 3 grossed in its opening day last year, to claim the opening weekend record (currently $151.1 million) for The Dark Knight might be somewhat premature, since Spider-Man 3 opened in May with school in session,(in your face Spiderboy) while theoretically, The Dark Knight could be more frontloaded with so much more interest and demand in seeing it opening day. Then again, word-of-mouth has generally been as positive as the reviews with 93% of Superhero Hype readers rating the movie with a 9 out of 10 or above and many have expressed a desire to see the movie a second or third time, even opening weekend. Stay tuned for the final weekend box office estimates tomorrow afternoon.

Record #2? Check!

The Dark Knight grossed the most ever for midnight shows, earning a massive $18.5 million from 3,040 theatres. The number did not include the 3:00 a.m. and 6 a.m. showings.

The Batman Begins follow-up broke the previous midnight record set by 20th Century Fox's Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith which grossed $16.9 million from 3,663 theatres. "Sith" went on to make $50 million in its first day, which was a Thursday. The highest single day opening record is currently held by Sony's Spider-Man 3, which made $59.8 million.

This morning, The Dark Knight expanded into a record 4,366 theatres.

The Dark Knight......

...it came, I saw, it kicked ass.

The best Batman film ever made.
This one set the bar very high. Great performances from Heath (that's all we've been hearing about) but don't miss Aaron Eckhart as Two-Face and Gary Oldman as Lt. Gordon.
What I want to know is this.....did anyone get the subtle Joker humour when the convoy was transferring Dent...what they had to go around??????

The Dark Knight Has Already Set One Record
Source: The Hollywood Reporter July 17, 2008

It's opening in the most North American theaters ever! From The Hollywood Reporter:

The film's more than 4,366 domestic playdates is a record, surpassing the 4,362 theaters for May 2007's bow of "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End." Double- and triple-screening at many venues means "Dark Knight" will play on 9,200 screens in the U.S. and Canada.

Its engagements include 94 Imax venues -- Nolan shot long segments using Imax-format cameras -- and most of those giant-screen auditoriums were sold out by midweek. A Warners exec estimated that Imax presales totaled $3.5 million, with advance ticketing for other venues adding considerably to that total.

Check out the link above for more on the film's opening weekend which begins tonight (Friday) at midnight.

The Dark Knight to Pack theatres Just Before the Dawn
Source: Fandango
July 9, 2008

Need we say more?

With more than a week to go before the highly-anticipated release of "The Dark Knight," Fandango, the nation's leading moviegoer destination, reports that many of its pre-opening Thursday midnight shows on July 17 are already sold out in cities across the country, from New York to Boise, Idaho. theatres continue to add 3:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. pre-opening show times to meet the ticketing demand.

"'The Dark Knight' may be responsible for a lot of bleary eyes at work next Friday morning," says Rick Butler, Chief Operating Officer for Fandango. "We're seeing a record number of late-night show times selling out in advance, while theatres are adding new performances every day."

More than 1,500 late-night show times of the movie have been scheduled for the film's pre-opening on Thursday night (Friday morning), July 17-18, at Fandango.com/TheDarkKnight. An online survey of more than 3,000 "The Dark Knight" fans on Fandango.com over the holiday weekend offered the following information on the late-night surge:

* 37% of respondents plan to see the film at least once during one of the late night performances on Thursday night.
* 38% say that they intend to take off a few hours or the entire day from work on Friday as a result of seeing the movie the night before.
* 60% of these moviegoers are male.
* 71% are under the age of 35.
* 39% plan to see the film in IMAX(R).
* 92% expect that the Academy will recognize Heath Ledger's performance as The Joker with a posthumous Oscar(R) nomination next year.

For Fandango, "The Dark Knight" is poised to be the year's top advance ticket-seller in wide release, out pacing "Iron Man," "Indiana Jones 4" and "Sex and the City" at the same point in those films' sales cycles.
