Heath Ledger "Best Villain"

Heath Ledger won "Best Villain" for The Dark Knight at the 2009 MTV Movie Awards, though it was announced before the show on the red carpet by MTV News correspondent Sway.
Why they pre-announced it I'll never know. Seems kind of anti-climatic to me.

Jonah Nolan sets us straight

So by now we all know that The Dark Knight has been nominated for 8 Oscar’s. BUT, it wasn’t nominated in top categories such as Best Picture, Best Director (Christopher Nolan…WTF?), and Best Adapted Screenplay. Co-writer Jonah Nolan sent his reaction to the fans at DarkCampaign.com:

hey — not sure who to address this to as it looks like a collective effort, but I just wanted to pass along my thanks.

It's truly humbling that you guys would take the time and effort to try to get the film recognized. I, like you, was disappointed that Chris didn't get some recognition this morning, but for Heath and so many of the people who worked so hard on this thing to get nominated is thrilling.

Any nomination for a comic book movie is a thing of beauty no matter how you slice it, and that takes the sting out a bit. Besides, I've been to the big show before, and, like any of these things, it's a little disappointing. Did you know it's not even an open bar once the show starts? At least this time I would have remembered to bring a little cash so I could buy myself a drink after losing.

The best part of this experience is seeing other people getting passionate about the film the way that we did. It has been a truly incredible experience. So thank you again.

best,

jonah Nolan

We, as fans, what the best for our heroes…including the Gold Statue. However, in true hero form, Jonah is telling us, it’s just an honor to be included.

The Dark Knight soared away with every trophy it was nominated for Wednesday at the 35th annual fan-favourite People's Choice Awards.

The caped crusader flick won five awards, including favourite cast, superhero, action movie and on-screen matchup for Christian Bale's Batman and the late Heath Ledger's Joker.

"On behalf of all of the cast from the movie, thank you very much to the fans," Bale said. "Here's to Heath."

Ledger Wins Australian Film Institute's Best Actor

The late Heath Ledger was awarded one of his country's most prestigious film awards on Saturday for his role as The Joker in The Dark Knight, reports Reuters.

Ledger, 28, who died of an accidental overdose of painkillers and other medicines in his New York apartment 11 months ago, was posthumously awarded the AFI (Australian Film Institute) international award for best actor.

Guests at a packed awards ceremony in Melbourne's Princess Theater rose to their feet clapping, but with some in tears, to pay tribute to the actor who was nominated for an Oscar for his role in 2005's Brokeback Mountain.

Heath Ledger's Bar Opens up

Five Leaves Left
Heath Ledger's Bar Opens

You're not one to buy the hype.

So when a tiny corner bar and restaurant on the outskirts of Williamsburg is being talked about like the next great Brooklyn hipster enclave—partly due to the fact that at one point it was Heath Ledger's pet project—you approach with caution.

Allow us, then, to take you on a tour of what to expect when you're out in Brooklyn and want to stop by Five Leaves—opening Wednesday—for a beer and a bite.

First, the designer is the man behind such barroom favorites as Moto, Smith and Mills and Tailor, so you'll notice the same attention to detail, handcrafted look and hint of cool about the place. The end effect is a bar that Thomas Edison might have built for his buddies. The handmade light fixtures are steel and wire concoctions that seem right out of a lab, and the bathroom door is a massive, '20s-era boiler room door. Even the walls are covered in what the owners call "steel wallpaper" (trust us, it's cozier than it sounds).

It's all meant to be a super casual California- and Australia-tinged cafe, coffeehouse and oyster bar, with greenmarket snacks like Sliced Radishes on Toast with Evans Farmhouse Butter.

And starting with tonight's friends and family opening party, you'll probably see a few famous faces amongst the Billyburg faithful.

OK, maybe you'll buy a little hype.

Let's break some records!!!!!

Dark Knight Sets New Opening Day Record!
Source: Box Office Mojo July 19, 2008

Box Office Mojo is reporting that Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight has set a new opening day record with $66.4 million in a record 4,366 theaters (including 94 IMAX theaters) nationwide.

With brisk advance sales and early sell-outs reported all week from Fandango, it looks like the latest installment in Warner Bros' Batman franchise has delivered an opening day gross bigger than the previous five movies were able to make in their opening weekends alone. Even though Dark Knight opened with roughly $7 million more than Spider-Man 3 grossed in its opening day last year, to claim the opening weekend record (currently $151.1 million) for The Dark Knight might be somewhat premature, since Spider-Man 3 opened in May with school in session,(in your face Spiderboy) while theoretically, The Dark Knight could be more frontloaded with so much more interest and demand in seeing it opening day. Then again, word-of-mouth has generally been as positive as the reviews with 93% of Superhero Hype readers rating the movie with a 9 out of 10 or above and many have expressed a desire to see the movie a second or third time, even opening weekend. Stay tuned for the final weekend box office estimates tomorrow afternoon.

Accidental Pill Overdose Killed Heath Ledger

Here's the final word on Heath's death. He will be missed. This article is from www.superherohype.com

Accidental Pill Overdose Killed Heath Ledger
February 6, 2008

The Dark Knight star Heath Ledger died of an accidental overdose of painkillers, sleeping pills, anti-anxiety medication and other prescription drugs, the New York City medical examiner said Wednesday.

The cause of death was "acute intoxication by the combined effects of oxycodone, hydrocodone, diazepam, temazepam, alprazolam and doxylamine," spokeswoman Ellen Borakove said in a statement.

The drugs are the generic names for the painkiller OxyContin, the anti-anxiety drugs Valium and Xanax, and the sleep aids Restoril and Unisom. Hydrocodone is a widely used prescription painkiller.

Borakove wouldn't say what concentrations of each drug were found in Ledger's blood, or whether one drug played a greater part than another in causing his death.

"What you're looking at here is the cumulative effects of these medications together," she said.

The ruling comes two weeks after the 28-year-old Australian-born actor was found dead in the bed of his rented SoHo apartment. Police found bottles of six types of prescription drugs, including sleeping pills and anti-anxiety medication, in his bedroom and bathroom.

Ledger was discovered by his masseuse on Jan. 22 after she arrived for an appointment that afternoon. She entered his bedroom to set up for the massage and found him unresponsive, and proceeded to call Mary-Kate Olsen three times over the next 9 minutes before dialing 911. Ledger had been dead for some time, and police say no foul play occurred.

In a statement released through Ledger's publicist, Ledger's father, Kim, said Wednesday: "While no medications were taken in excess, we learned today the combination of doctor-prescribed drugs proved lethal for our boy. Heath's accidental death serves as a caution to the hidden dangers of combining prescription medication, even at low dosage."
