5 Reasons Your Students Should Be Reading Comic Books

Literacy is a complicated concept. What literacy includes seems to widen and envelop more each year. We are required to read, interpret, and understand many different genres of communication. One thing is clear though–the more we read the more we understand.
Comic books, or some refer to them as graphic novels, are an underrated resource for developing literacy. When is the last time you visited a comic book shop? I assure you there is more than meets the eye on the treasured shelves of these stores.

Batmobile on Saturday

From the 1966 television series with Adam West to the latest movies with Christian Bale, every time Batman is reborn, so is the Batmobile. Starting with the Lincoln Futura that gave birth to the first Batmobile, through the jet-powered dragsters of the 1990s movies to the tank-like Tumbler in "The Dark Knight Rises" hitting theaters this month, this three-part video series serves up a detailed look at five Batmobiles that have played their part in helping good defeat evil over the past five decades.

Comic Book Confidential

Made in 1988, Ron Mann’s classic Comic Book Confidential was way ahead of its time. Mann, a master of documenting alternative cultures, set his sights on the history of the comic book industry—an industry that once was reviled for its violent content or considered too mainstream. Mann sits down with more than 20 of the most significant comic artists and writers in North America (including heavyweights such as Stan Lee, Frank Miller, Harvey Kurtzman and Gary Panter) and examines how our current cultural fabric has quietly been influenced by this warts-and-all alternative art form. Batman named greatest comic hero

http://www.guardian.co.uk/books/2012/feb/28/batman-greatest-comic-hero?INTCMP=SRCH

Like I didn't know this already, but it's nice to have some validation, right?

Batman ... knocking out the competition Photograph: Jerry Robinson/AP
Batman's utility belt doesn't really compare to the superpowers of Spider-Man and Superman, but Gotham City's caped crusader has nonetheless been named the greatest comic hero of all time.
The readers of Comic Heroes magazine voted for Batman, the alias of billionaire Bruce Wayne, as their top comic hero, ahead of the second-placed Spider-Man and the third-placed Superman. The magazine is not the first to rank heroes from the world of comics: in 2008 Empire magazine put Superman top, followed by Batman and John Constantine, the exorcist created by Alan Moore, while the Man of Steel also topped a list from IGN.
