Edmonton comic book illustrator recruited for Marvel’s Indigenous series

An Edmonton comic book illustrator is joining the Marvel team to illustrate part of a new anthology.

Kyle Charles received an email from Marvel Comics in August, asking if he would be a part of Marvel’s Voices: Indigenous Voices Volume 1.

“I just couldn’t believe it,” he said. “Usually you have to fight to get in to Marvel. You have a lot to prove. For them to come to me… it was unexpected.”

For the anthology, Charles worked on the story of Danielle “Dani” Moonstar and drew a brand new Indigenous mutant for the X-Men series.

“Dani Moonstar is an Indigenous female mutant,” he said. “She’s got wicked powers. She’s part of the New Mutants, that was really punk rock back in the 80s.”

With the 25th anniversary of the last DC and Marvel Comics crossover approaching, and the American comics industry in a state of deep uncertainty, writer Gail Simone kicked off a moment of positive Twitter energy with one simple question: What would you like to see in a new Marvel/DC crossover? 

 And some of Marvel and DC’s biggest creators have answered, with the hashtag #PleaseMarvelDC.

The number one movie of last year was based on a comic book. The year before, two of the top five movies were based on comics. The year before that, both of the two top movies of the year were inspired by comics; both went on to make more than $1 billion worldwide and are now among the top 15 highest-grossing movies in history. Next year, no less than ten (10) movies based on comic books will open in theaters. Blessed are the geeks, for they have inherited the earth, at least as far as Hollywood is concerned.

I can remember watching these on TVO (TV Ontario, public TV) when I was a kid. I loved them! But then again, when you’re 5-6 you don’t have that great taste. HA!

Superman co-creator Joe Shuster had a secret identity as a fetish artist. Shuster and his Superman partner Jerry Seigel saw none of the riches Superman was making for DC Comics, or National as it was known during the 30s and 40s. In fact both were sacked after they tried to get a share of the money. To pay the bills, Shuster took a job illustrating a pulp magazine called Night of Horrors, which featured sado-masochistic scenes of women whipping men and men liking it.

Over the weekend, Marvel featured a unique sale: purchase a comic on the Marvel Comics app and Marvel would email you a $5 coupon that could be used at any local brick-and-mortar comic book shop.  Pretty forward thinking, right?  Here’s the quote from Marvel regarding the promotion: “As we continue to grow the digital comics world, we want to make sure it’s always to the benefit of the medium and our comic shop retail partners,” said Peter Phillips, Senior Vice President & General Manager, Marvel Digital Media Group. “This coupon is a great way for us to let more of our fans know about their local comic store and incentivize them to make the trip there. At the end of the day, our goals in the print and digital mediums are the same—bring more fans to comics.”

Canadian Content ?

With the rumor of Marvel cancelling the Canadian Superhero title "Alpha Flight" here's one bloggers take on it.

Marvel is Bringing Back Canadian Super-Team Alpha Flight!!!!

I'm pretty excited about this, I just bought the complete run on eBay last fall.

Beginning in June, Canada will once again see its greatest superheroes return to action.
Earlier today, Marvel Comics announced that Alpha Flight will be relaunched this June as an eight issue maxi-series by the writing team of Greg Pak and Fred Van Lente with art by Dale Eaglesham. The events in Alpha Flight will tie into Marvel's Fear Itself crossover as well.
Alpha Flight was created by John Byrne in 1979 in Uncanny X-Men #120. Byrne later shepherded Alpha Flight into their first ongoing series which ran for 11 years. Three revivals have been published since then, including an Omega Flight miniseries in 2007.

X-Men: First Class charts the epic beginning of the X-Men saga, and reveals a secret history of famous global events. Before mutants had revealed themselves to the world, and before Charles Xavier and Erik Lehnsherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Not archenemies, they were instead at first the closest of friends, working together with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to prevent nuclear Armageddon. In the process, a grave rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X's X-Men.

Comic Books used to fight Illiteracy

Comics used to be for kids, and nobody really approved of them. Whether the comics were about Archie, Richie Rich, or Batman, no one felt they had any redeeming value. Parents and teachers saw them as time-wasters that kept children from reading "real" books.
Then the world began changing. Will Eisner (1917-2005), known as the "father of the graphic novel," expanded his cartooning, and he began using sequential art to tell visual narratives that were of interest to adults. The first book of this type created by Eisner was "A Contract with God and other Tenement Stories." During the next decade, Art Spiegelman wrote his two-volume Maus, about Nazi Germany and the Holocaust, and in 1992, Spiegelman was given a special Pulitzer Prize for his work.

Odds are that unless you were in Canada in 1942 or a subscriber to THE BUYERS GUIDE FOR COMICS FANDOM in 1973, you have never seen this CAPTAIN MARVEL story no matter how big a fan you might be of the Big Red Cheese. In the early seventies, around the time DC brought back SHAZAM, TBG began running some old stories in their entirety that DC would never have printed.

The $65 million musical produced by Toronto’s Michael Cohl suffered yet another set-back on Monday night, when a 31 year-old actor identified as Christopher Tierney fell 30 feet to the stage during a climactic flying sequence.




Firefighters were called to the Foxwoods Theatre in New York City at 10:45 p.m. Monday in response to an emergency call. Audience photos showed a man, later identified as Tierney, wearing a neck brace as he was wheeled out on a gurney.

When Marvel announced that 'The Incredible Hulk' would be returning to television in the wake of Warner's plans to revive 'Wonder Woman' for the small screen, the knee jerk reaction was to chalk it up to nostalgia programming. We've already seen 'Battlestar Galactica,' 'The Bionic Woman,' and 'Knight Rider' revived for TV; these moves just looked like more of that. However, a deeper look at Marvel's plans reveals that this isn't a retro cash-in, but part of a bigger push to establish their brand on television with the same success they've had on film.
